T T HIS paper demonstrates the use of stratified random sampling and statistical analysis applied to a land-use problem. The objectives of the inquiry in which these techniques were used were (1) to locate and map the swamps and marshes of eastern Wisconsin (Fig. 1),1 (2) to map the utilization of this land, and (3) to evaluate its significance to the economy of the region. Only the first two objectives will be treated in this paper. Although the term wet land has been used to designate the subject under consideration, the term organic soils could have been used as well. It was found in the field that, in places that had detailed soil map coverage, the writer's classification of wet land included only those areas on the map designated as peat or muck
