The associations that may be discovered by map comparison are influenced by the nature of the map features being compared and by the criteria used for making the comparisons. The criteria of identity were used to compare the looks and patterns of choropleth maps. Only linear and positive correlations were revealed by the comparison of map looks, whereas the comparison of map patterns can reveal many associations, including curvilinear associations, but pattern comparison does not reveal associations which are not strictly bijective
