It is often expedient to use a mass conservation or box-type model of atmospheric dispersion in mountain valleys because of the ease of definition of the box and the complexities of airflow in rugged terrain. The box model may be parameterized for use in a valley where observed mixing height data are unavailable. The parameterization is achieved through a series of modeling procedures. When the memory characteristic is taken into account, the box model performs satisfactorily with synthetic mixing height data and, therefore, could be a useful tool in air quality planning for mountain valleys
