Although Tarawa Atoll appears to be little different from the other fifteen Gilbert Islands it has been the most important island of the group for seventy years. A detailed examination of physical relationships and historical developments illuminates the reasons for its precedence. Geographical situation and excellent lagoon passage and anchorage have been dominant factors since its selection for Protectorate headquarters in 1895, whereas turbulent inhabitants, port of entry policies, and a variety of centripetal factors have contributed to the augmentation at various times. As a case study in microcosm it illustrates many of the factors of political geography which lead toward the development of capitals
