American involvement in many aspects of Australian agriculture is increasing. Apart from capital investment, growing numbers of Americans are seeking a new ‘frontier’ across the Pacific and are having a powerful impact on the pace and scale of rural development in Australia. Australian cotton growing was most affected by the entry into the industry of U.S. growers and expertise in the 1960s, the stimulus for which can be found in positive and negative features of agricultural policy which operated in both countries. ‘Push and pull’ forces emanating from these policies were reinforced by a strong ‘friends and relatives’ effect in generating and sustaining the process of migration. The remarkable transformation to intense irrigated cotton growing which resulted has spilled over into other areas of Australian agriculture. The American presence and influence have become a useful conduit for continued innovation and cultural exchange between two developed nations
