This paper provides a descriptive analysis of recent population changes in the Northern Territory with particular emphasis on the pattern and impact of migration. As a preliminary, methodological problems in allocating inter‐censal change to different migration flows are discussed and discrepancies in demographic accounting are highlighted Following several years of rapid population growth, the Territory has entered a phase of zero to negative growth characterised by net migration losses. This is linked to recent cuts in per capita Commonwealth grants and underlines the significance of government spending in maintaining a population base in Australia's North
