During the 1960s better beef prices provided an incentive for the development of the open range production of cattle in the Northern Territory. For the Top End, Townsville stylo (5tyIosanth.es humilisA an annual pasture legume, offered prospects of increased productivity, but by the mid‐1970s these optimistic expectations remained largely unrealised. Anthracnose infestations of the legume contributed to this disappointment, but this paper argues that other difficulties were also important. Adoption of the introduced pasture involved levels of pasture husbandry and herd management without precedent in the Territory cattle industry. This analysis considers the overall environment for the adoption of this pasture innovation and highlights differences between agricultural scientists who experimented with the legume and cattlemen who used it on a commercial scale. These differences impeded the successful adoption of TS and where they persist they will dog the introduction of innovations in biological technology
