Rites and Reason is the theatre component of Afro-American Studies at Brown University. Headed by Dr. George Bass, with the collaboration of members of the faculty and community, since 1973, the unit has worked to bridge the gaps which exist between a growing middle-class of university-educated professionals and their constituency, largely working-class, often under-educated, yet committed blacks. Rhett jones, a member of the Afro-American Studies Program at Brown, discusses in this essay a play he and Bass worked on for two years. The Providence Garden Blues (1975) was a unique experiment in developing dialogues between researchers and community members
