This article analyses the local roots of Tradiciones cuzqueñas, published in two volumes in 1884 and 1886. The author, Clorinda Matto, gives much greater importance to the original material than Ricardo Palma, the creator of « tradiciones » did ; perhaps in an effort to confirm their historical value. Unlike Palma, Matto limits her study to Cuzco. Tradiciones cuzqueñas is an idyllic évocation of several historical periods in order to compare them to the corruption and poverty of the present. The Inca Empire and 17th century Cuzco are therein idealized. The lofty praises Tupac Amaru and Bolivar receive from Matto contrast with Palma's ambiguous treatment of the same subjects. Lastly, Tradiciones cuzqueñas are a literary claim to Cuzcos's cultural heritage, which is intended to reassert the importance of a City which has been on the decline since 1840
