The present article analyses the function and role of sayings in Ricardo Palma 's Tradiciones peruanas. The use of paremies corresponds to a historical evolution of palmian production. It concerns the rooting ofsuch and such a proverbial construct within the history of Peru and daim for each either a noble or a popular origin. This quest ofthe origins is infact a mystification as its Peruvian specificity is easily questionable along with the truthfulness ofthe anecdote. Philological research proved in Papeletas lexicograficas by Palma is only a pretext hère to demonstrate the genius ofthe hispanic tradition of anecdote collecting
