This study, which was designed as the introduction to an enquiry into literacy, offers an epistemological, methodological and historiographie reflection on the teaching of reading and writing in modem Spain along the following axes : the role of signature as a cultural and social marker, and the prerequisites for a quantitative and qualitative analysis ; the limits inherent in the inevitable scarcity of sources ; the assessment and sociology of literacy compaigns. An exploration into the series constituted by men's and women's literacy rates in Madrid between 1600 and 1860 leads this study to propound a new, more aecurate chronology of the Spanish case wich is at variance with that of the other European countries
