Galicia, in Northwest Spain, was a region with a high rate of iliteracy, a reduced book trade and limited and poor private libraries, but it had a lot of ecclesiastical librairies. The University o f Santiago even had its own library at the end ofXVIIIc. thanks to the expropriation of the Jesuits' books, as well as the reform of the programme of studies and to considerable donations given by enlightened philanthropists; being closely watched by ecclesiastical and civil power, the library filled in a historical gap and allowed readers to gain access to an apparently daring though basically utilitarian book collection
