Recent events in India, culminating with the declaration of a “state of emergency” by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in June 1975 and the subsequent suspension of many of the civil rights previously maintained under the Indian system of parliamentary democracy, have focused renewed attention on India's massive economic problems. Increasing popular unrest over the slow pace of economic progress undoubtedly played a role in fueling the rise of the loosely organized opposition movement that Mrs. Gandhi sought to destroy with her declaration of emergency. And, the imposition by India's political leadership of a new and more authoritarian form of rule has been defended on the grounds that it offers the only hope for solving India's economic problems
