Modern technology and the development of the capitalist system have combined to force large corporations in the advanced industrial countries to function increasingly outside the nation-state framework. There is now a growing realization that the institutional power of multinational corporations, particularly the American-based ones which dominate the world structure of capitalism, is, in its impact on third world countries, largely negative. This essay lends support to that view in two ways: first, by examining general aspects of the contradiction between the rationale and motives of the multinationals and the objectives of development in third world countries; and second, by focusing on the measurable effects of the multinationals on the political economy of a single country, Malaysia
