Listings of 100 leading world industrial companies are provided, as far as possible on the basis of market capitalisation, which may allow more direct comparisons to be drawn than hitherto possible between large-scale enterprises in different economies on the eve of the First World War. Amongst other things, these confirm the general dominance of United States firms at this time, occupying more than half these positions, but they also underline the fact that there were numerous British and German enterprises which had grown to a scale comparable with that of their American counterparts
