In research on urbanization‐agriculture interactions, little attention has been paid to variation in farmers' evaluations of the potential urbanization forces or the strategies adopted. A conceptual framework is developed linking variation in farmers' evaluations and strategies to the strength of potential urbanization forces. Based on survey data from the Paris region, a strong relationship was found between these forces and farmers' evaluations of them as hypothesized; little relationship appeared, however, between either these forces or the evaluations and agricultural strategies. A partial explanation is offered based on the adaptive behaviour of some farmers.
