The quest for representative democracy has proven difficult, if not elusive, for many Latin American nations in the two centuries since independence. The history of Costa Rica, however, provides an example of a country that has achieved considerable success in this quest. Public education often enters discussions of how this small Central American republic has been able to build a relatively resilient democracy. Most histories of education confine themselves to fairly narrow institutional frameworks so that the connections between school systems and larger matters in national politics are seldom explored. In La educación en Costa Rica de la época colonial al presente, an in-depth study of the history of education in Costa Rica, Iván Molina Jiménez spans this gap to place his central theme in proper perspective. This thoroughly researched book indicates that a vigorous, responsive public school system and responsible representative government were tied together in a close relationship. The two were linked inextricably to each other—an implicitly shared dependency. This placement of the history of educational institutions in their political context offers a case study that constitutes a useful supplement to broader studies of political trends in Latin America by authorities such as Paul Drake, Geraldine Lievesley, John Peeler, Torcuato di Tella, and Michael Conniff
