Figure I is exemplified by the union of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers to form the Ohio; Figure II by the joining of the Mississippi and Ohio upon which the latter river loses its identity; Figure III-a by the Missouri River receiving as a tributary the Little Missouri River; Figure III-b by the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers, which below their junction are known simply as the Saskatchewan. The first method of naming is rare in the English-speaking countries. The second represents the almost universal usage throughout the Englishspeaking countries with the exception of those in North America. The third method is very common in the United States (rather less so in Canada). Generally speaking, in the United States the larger streams are named upon the second principle; the smaller streams very often upon the third. The usage differs with different regions of the United States, the third being generally more common in the West than in the East. In the instances represented by Figure III, A1 and A, characteristically bear the same name as A but with a distinguishing word, commonly Fork or Branch. Thus we may have East and West Forks of A, or North and South Branches. Less commonly a distinguishing adjective may be prefixed to yield such a name as Little A.1
