A: examination of the Proverbs and Proverbial Expressions Current in the United States East of the Missouri and North of the Ohio Rivers published by Miss Margaret Hardie (AMERICAN SPEECH IV, 461-472) shows some interesting and striking facts. Inasmuch as the material here assembled represents the collections not of one person but of ten others besides Miss Hardie, and since every proverb has been vouched for as common to colloquial discourse of the people of the northeastern part of the United States by at least three persons, we may consider these proverbs a representative cross-section of those current in this area of the United States
