D ESCRIPTIVE LINGUISTICS, in its broadest aspects, tells us not only what forms occur and in what combinations, but also in what parts of the linguistic community and in the speech or writing of what social groups particular variants may be found.x By examining these regional and social differences within the generally uniform structure of a language, dialectologists are able to correlate linguistic data with patterns of settlement history, regional growth, and social structure; furthermore, they are able to provide a solid basis of fact for the value judgments necessary in such applications of linguistics as lexicography and the teaching of English.2 These regional and social differences have been summarized, for the older settlement area along the Atlantic seaboard, in Hans Kurath's Word Geography of the Eastern United States, in E. Bagby Atwood's Survey of Verb Forms in the Eastern United States, and in Kurath and Raven I.
