cEVERAL YEARSAGO, the question was asked about the origin of Charley kJ horse,l but no answer was ever given. After a long search, I believe I have found a clew that may provide the answer. First of all, however, it may be of interest to study some explanations that have been proposed heretofore and to find out why they are unsatisfactory. Most athletes know that a Charley horse is a sprain of a leg muscle. However, it may also occur in the arm, as was made clear by Babe Ruth when he said, during his tour of Japan before the war, that he was greeted by so many admirers that he had gotten a Charley horse in his arm. A baseball ofiicial, Bill Brandt, was asked by a magazine editor to explain the origin of the term. He gave this reply
