URING THE PAST TWO YEARS (1972-74), generous support from both the National Endowment for the Humanities and Emory University has helped to establish a definite schedule for completing the fieldwork that had been proposed and initiated for the Linguistic Atlas of the Gulf States (LAGS) project.l The plans sketched in the first interim report can now be elaborated to cover research progress and advanced to include the probable format and composition of the atlas itself.2 The fieldwork needed to bring in a sample of seven hundred records should be completed before July 1976, and all of the basic materials should be ready for publication before July 1980
