The Evolution of the Eight Common Core Area Cacrep Standards

The purpose of this study was to explore how the common core area CACREP standards have changed since their inception. We utilized thematic analysis to systematically track changes across seven iterations of the eight common core area CACREP standards. Thematic analysis is an approach for recognizing themes in data. Results included one structure‐related theme (increased number of standards) and five content‐related themes: Strengthened professional identity, more sophisticated application of technology, increased emphasis on multicultural variables and systems, increased focus on clinical practice, and increased focus on wellness and insight of client and counselor. We discuss these results within the context of the evolution of the profession and provide implications for counselor educators
