This article explores the castle residence depicted of the Middle English Sir Degrevant as an example of a late fourteenth-century tower house and barmkin, a form of small-scale, castle architecture that emerged along the Anglo-Scottish border in direct response to English military incursions into Scotland, beginning in the late thirteenth century
