Images of the Midi during the Restoration : variations on the Southern character. The White Terror of 1815 strongly reactivated a number of symbolic representations on Southerners in the litterature of the time. Between repeating common stereotypes relating to the influence of climate and the shadow cast by regional economic difficulties which reflected on the character of inhabitants and on their hospitality, writings during the Restoration showed the Midi as a place where the expression of French political passions was particularly exacerbated. If observers of the time used the South as an exemplary territory of their own opinions – White Midi and Democratic Midi – they were nonetheless confronted with the importance of internal divisions and with the strong variations seen in different cities. Southerners themselves deplored the image of their society permanently torn by the demons of internal disputes
