The inventory of women’s monasteries founded before the end of the 11th century in southern France, published in 1976 by Jean Verdon, is the starting point for this attempt to synthesize the topography and architecture of these establishments in the Aquitaine region, supplemented by the new foundations of the 11th and 12th centuries. The territory covered is limited to the ecclesiastical provinces of Bordeaux and Auch, to which is added the diocese of Limoges, which was under the jurisdiction of the archbishops of Bourges but which was culturally and politically linked to the duchy of Aquitaine, controlled by the counts of Poitiers. The aim here is to evoke the material arrangements of these establishments, their churches and the buildings housing their communities during the Romanesque period, which is generally considered to be a sort of apogee of monastic architecture, between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. The main difficulty of such an undertaking lies in the fragmentary nature of the material elements still preserved, which requires recourse to modern sources and to information provided by archaeology
