This is less a study of bastides than one of their representations. The symbolic image of bastides appeared as early as the 17th and 18th Centuries, but it was constituted especially during the first half of the 19th Century by small touches in the manner of an Impressionnistic painting. This image is the result of a series of impressions put together in a masterly manner in 1872 by Alcide Curie-Séïmbres and repeated by most later authors
