Economie Space and Technologies in Southern France during the Ancien Regime : the Example of Marseille's Cotton Fabric Industry. The mastery of space is at the heart of Marseille's cotton fabric industry in the Ancien Regime. The dynamic local artisan sector and opportunities stemming from international trade combined to give birth to a sector of activity which showed strong technological capacity up to the middle of the 18th Century. From then on, the cotton fabric industry in Marseille waned. Opening up to foreign markets became a source of vulnerability and local industrial forces were unable to integrate the technological system of the beginnings of the First Industrial Revolution
