The Learned World and the Sale of book Collections in Southern France during the Second Half of the 18th Century. The last decades of the 18th century witnessed the multiplication of public sales of books in Provence and in Languedoc. These sales gradually adopted the methods that had become common in Paris : production of a catalogue, announcements in local journals, using specialized booksellers. Letters reveal the tensions that rise around these sales : the pecuniary profit expected through these dispersions was confronted by the fear of seeing collections useful to the learned world be expatriated ; the difficulty of acceding to auctions in Lyon and Paris where the ordinary resources of the Republic of Letters ran up against the blaze of the market for rare books ; the functioning of communities of work around the learned and bibliophilic manipulation of sales catalogues
