Marcus Clarke's For the Term of His Natural Life is one of the best and has proved one of the most enduringly popular of all the 'sensation novels' of the mid-Victorian period. It is therefore interesting that unpublished letters to Clarke from Charles Reade and Wilkie Collins, the most admired of the elder generation of sensation novelists, are held in the Mitchell Library, Sydney, and that Clarke adapted novels by both Reade and Collins for the Australian stage. (Clarke, English-born,emigrated to Australia in 1863, at the age of seventeen.)
