McAuleyâ s critique of John Shaw Neilsonâ s poetry identifies a â weakness in diction arising from a certain clumsiness and lack of self-clarification in the poetâ . Nevertheless, a close analysis of Shaw Neilsonâ s versification reveals, in some poems, an admirable â metrical senseâ . McAuley also notes similarities with the poetry of William Blake and John Clare, and argues that the quality of Neilsonâ s poems of pathos have been obscured by criticsâ concentration on the â visionaryâ poems
