Once upon a time, Australian literary criticism was written piecemeal, mainly from outside the academy. Now most of it emerges from within the walls, often dour, routine, derivative stuff, sometimes animated by supple assimilation of theory to local conditions and complaints. In this collection of critical works on Australian authors, Jack Beasley's book recalls a lost, amateur era in Australian letters. We will not see many of its like again
