In 2007, I attended a conference on cultural criminology. Speakers included Jeff Ferrell, Keith Hayward and Jock Young—all authors of Cultural Criminology: An Invitation under review here. I had gone to find out what cultural criminology is all about; I failed miserably in my quest. To me, the occasion was like most other conferences: some papers were excellent, some were nondescript and some were downright mystifying. But I couldn’t see what was distinctly ‘cultural’ about the overall package. Nonetheless, the enthusiasm and verve with which the papers were delivered succeeded in whetting my appetite for more. Accordingly, I next read Cultural Criminology Unleashed (Ferrell et al. 2004), and had the same reaction to that book as I had had to the 2007 conference. Yet, many of the people involved in the cultural criminology project are academics whose work I admire very much indeed. So I was not inclined
