Margaret Laurence was born in 1926. She grew up in south-western Manitoba, and four of her works, The Stone Angel (1964), A Jest of Cod (1966), The Fire-Dwellers (1969), and A Bird in the House (1970), stem from a prairie town she calls Manawaka, its people and the land around it. Willa Cather was born in 1875. She grew up in Nebraska, and two of her novels, O Pioneers (1913) and My Antonia (1918), are rooted there, in a little western town she called Hanover, then Black Hawk, and in the prairie country surrounding it
