In recent years, a vigorous historiographical debate has swirled around the basic vision and goals of antebellum American educational reformers. Revisionist histories have strongly challenged traditional portraits of democratic educational missionaries spreading the American dream; recent revisions have focussed instead upon the goals of social control and cultural hegemony implicit in middle-class reformers' attempts to save poor children from themselves and their parents. To some historians, the moral crusades of the mid-nineteenth century seem to indict rather than to ennoble the crusaders. This paper attempts to shed a little more light on this controversy, by lengthening the historical perspective and illuminating the shades and contrasts within earlier American visions of moral education1
