Dirk Hoerder, editor. "Struggle a Hard Battle": Essays on Working-Class Immigrants. Dekalb: Northern Illinois University Press, 1986. 375 pp. Gary R. Mormino & George E. Pozzetta. The Immigrant World of Ybor City : Italians and their Latin Neighbors in Tampa, 1885-1985. Champaign: University of Illinois Press, 1987. xiii + 368 pp. Twenty-two years ago, in an influential volume of essays on southern history, Arthur Link and Rembert Patrick wrote, "Southerners who lament that they are misunderstood or maligned must admit that in any event their region has not been ignored. Since the colonial era the number of articles and books about the South has multiplied in geometric ratio, until southern history excels as well as exceeds that of any other region of the United States." Indeed, reviewers described this volume as everything from "amazingly comprehensive" to a "monumental commentary on the writing of Southern history." And, to its credit, for over two decades it has served to chart the direction and record the progress of southern historiography.1
