Introduction During World War I the Du Pont corporation transformed itself from a manufacturer of commercial and military exposives into a giant of the global chemistry industry. The company had launched a search for new product lines in 1908, when cutbacks in government military appropriations threatened the firm with excess capacity; but wartime expansion in plant and personnel increased both the urgency and the opportunity to fulfill that pre- war decision for diversification
