The making of Tabu stands as a major point in the careers of both Robert J. Flaherty and F. W. Murnau. For Flaherty, it was to be the last effort to work on a film distributed by a major American company, and the end of an attempt to make films for commercial U.S. release that lasted, sporadically, for nine years. For Murnau, who died shortly before the film's 1931 release, Tabu was to mark the termination and possibly, as Lotte Eisner claimed, the culmination of his career
