The regard which the world once held for Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp has not been equalled by any screen character of this century. But Charles Spencer Chaplin, the man who created and played that character so consummately, is not always remembered so fondly, especially in America. For his life was one which became as politically and socially controversial as a politician's, and his once friendly relationship with an adoring American public ended in a sharp, bitter separation in 1952
