The number of possible hypothetical interpretations given is considerable and often mutually exclusive. Berger quotes Rybakov, charitably mentioning only the mathematical claims of the latter and not the ziggurats, architects' graves, or ancient masonic traditions. [2] This is no doubt the same practice as was condemned in the medieval western penitentials: see, for example, the early eleventh-century Corrector of Burchard of Worms (McNeill and Gamer Citation1965, 334). [3] The Greek divination is for both young women and young men and also involves symbolic locks and keys. [4] For example, it is the theme of Zhukovskii's Svetlana (1812) and an incident in Pushkin's Eugene Onegin (final version 1837) (Ryan and Wigzell Citation1992)
