A LONG-ENGRAINED reluctance to mix numbers with literature will be shared, I am sure, by most readers. Yet I must yield. The intention of this paper is to show how a very little, very simple arithmetic can rebut an intuitive perception of style: in particular, how the identification of rhyme in prose narrative may be a dangerous adventure if it is not tempered with a minimum of mathematics. In a recent study of the oral cante-fable among the Tonga (a Bantu-speaking people of Southern Zambia) the author, after dealing with the songs that are inset in the story, goes on to describe the prose narrative
