IN 1906 I spent Christmas at the house of my guide Krsto Pejovid at Njegushi in Montenegro. It was a typical peasant house, consisting of one room; the hearth was in the middle of the floor and there was no chimney. I arrived a day or two before Christmas during the last days of the fortnight's fast which my host and hostess had rigidly observed. During this time they ate neither meat, fish, milk, cheese, eggs nor oil; bread, potatoes, salt cabbage and beans made up the peasants' diet and the fast was especially strict on Christmas Eve
