Readers of Folklore will probably already have heard the sad news that the great historian E.P. Thompson died this August. Edward Thompson is known world-wide for the remarkable book he published in 1963, The Making of the English Working Class: a huge parish chest of a book, brimful of scholarship, excitement, wit, anger and brilliant insight. The book was recognised as a classic as soon as it appeared. For his own, and for younger generations of historians, it has become not only a source-book and a guide, but an inspiration. In its profound scholarship and the nature of its impact, the book's stature in our own time can only be compared to that in the eighteenth century of Gibbon's Decline and Fall
