ONE snowy night in March 1947 I was born in an isolated cottage in the west Dorset parish of Thorncombe. A peculiarity of our part of the parish was that although it was administratively in Dorset it had a Somerset address, and those houses which had telephones had Devon numbers. Throughout my childhood I unconsciously absorbed a number of traditional beliefs and ideas-such things, as I later learnt, were referred to as 'folklore
