The story presented in this article is one of two by author, folklorist, and educator P. A. Lindholm that appeared in two different popular Swedish children’s magazines in 1907. Both stories involve encounters between Sámi (Lapp) youths and the Sámi ogre, Stallo; both were illustrated by John Bauer. Although fairy tales based on recombinations of traditional motifs were in widespread circulation during this period, those with Sámi themes and protagonists were not. The inclusion of these two tales at a time when Sweden was aggressively expanding and developing northern industries and coming into contact/conflict with the local Sámi provides insights into Swedish policy vis-à-vis the Sámi in the twentieth century even as these particular stories, embedded in larger collections for children, were presented as ‘just fairy tales’
