In July 1978, the Department of Foreign Languages and Bilingual Studies of Eastern Michigan University received Title VI funding under NDEA to develop and implement graduate and undergraduate interdisciplinary curricula in Language and International Trade. When federal funding ended in June 1980, the programs were permanently established at the University and have played a major role in helping the Department of Foreign Languages and Bilingual Studies realize a 65 percent increase in enrollments over 1977–78. There are now two hundred graduate and undergraduate majors in the programs, and enrollment continues to grow. The dramatic rise in enrollments also increased the advising load in the department and created the need to identify the specifics of career opportunities for bilingual positions in business; in particular, the nature of entry‐level positions and the nature of potential employer expectations. This led to the decision to conduct a survey of private sector employees in Michigan and some employers in nearby states in order to gather information regarding current and future needs for bilingual employees. This report presents a summary of the findings and offers specific recommendations to persons interested in bilingual careers in business
