In our search for the ‘right’ method or approach, we often forget that the teacher's own growth and development are of ultimate importance. This article presents a rationale for ‘humanizing’ teacher inservice education and one values clarification technique–an attitude survey–used to assist teachers in their growth. This survey was developed to aid teachers in exploring their own attitudes and beliefs about foreign language learning and teaching. The attitude survey is comprised of fifty‐three questions which deal with a variety of ideas on the philosophy of language teaching, techniques, innovations, learning behaviors, etc. A scoring section and an explanation of the scoring procedures and their meanings are included, the function of which is to provide for discussion of values as related to the teaching profession
