Even though Enlightenment philosophes often drew on relativistic comparisons among societies and historical eras to legitimize their ideas for reform, most would not argue for extending social tolerance of same-sex love, even when faced with historical trends such as Greek pederasty. Although in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries French classicists and historians did more to challenge established interpretations and narratives, they still sought to construct a rational foundation for denying the historical reality for legitimized sodomy or to draw arguments for chaste pederasty from ancient sources. Examining early modern French translations of Aristophanes and Plato's Symposium, as well as detailed historical narratives of ancient Greece from 1650 to 1789, this essay argues that scholarly treatments of Greek pederasty reflected broader shifts in attitudes toward sodomy.
