In January 1631 Gaston d’Orléans publicly declared himself an enemy of Cardinal Richelieu. Pursued by his brother, he fled the kingdom to seek refuge abroad. A few months later he was joined in exile by his mother, Marie de Medici. His actions were representative of a noble’s revolt during the Old Regime. But one of its aspects has not yet attracted the attention of historians: the relationships between foreign powers and the rebels. This article shows how the internal affairs of a kingdom may be strongly linked to the international situation. After presenting the path of Gaston d’Orléans, the text analyzes how the revolt of 1631-32 may have borne on the affairs of other European powers and examines their actions in this matter, which, in the end, contributed to the strengthening of France, and Cardinal Richelieu, on the internal and external scenes
