The French Communist Party entered the Second World War in a state of political disgrace and disarray. Communist support of the Hitler-Stalin Pact had outraged the national community and led parliament to outlaw the Party on August 26, 1939. When the Germans defeated France in June 1940, the French Communist party (PCF) faced a dilemma of divided loyalties. Despite the presence of German soldiers in their own country, the PCF was still bound to support the Soviet Union's arrangement with Nazi Germany. The Central Committee of the PCF labelled the war as a conflict between two imperialisms and urged workers to refuse any involvement. Their policy toward the Nazis cost them credibility among the general public and among significant numbers of their own members.1 Yet, by the Liberation, the Party had salvaged its reputation. Through their prominent role in the Resistance, French Communists were transformed into a popular, national political force. In the legislative elections of 1946 the Party won 28.6 per cent of the vote-marking to this day the height of its public support
